Barriers to Imitation
Characteristics of your business resources (equipment, process, design…) that make it difficult for others to duplicate.
Capabilities
The combination of your business ideas, intellectual property, material equipment and funds to produce essential activities.
Competitive Advantage
Characteristics of your business that allow it to out perform your direct rivals (those in your business and market).
Competitor Analysis
Intentional process focused on understanding your business’s competitors’ capabilities, performance, and strategies (plans for their business).
Cost Leadership
Your business’s ability to produce your product or provide a service at the lowest cost compared to your direct competition, with the features your customer wants.
Economies of Scale
The cost of one of the products your company makes goes down as the number you produce increases.
Environmental Analysis
(not the ecology) An intentional understanding of the things in society in general that can affect your business/industry and the other companies in it.
Limit Pricing
Holding or lowering your prices to a level that provides less profit in the short term in order to discourage competitors from entering your market.
Minimum Efficient Scale
The smallest production amount that has the minimum cost.
Real Options
Investments that can open up (but you don’t have to take advantage of) the possibility of future actions with potential long terms benefits.
Reputation Pricing
Drastically lowering your prices in response to a new competitor entering your market in order to establish the reputation of being a fierce competitor.
Spillover
Knowledge gained by one business that is observed by another. (Possible example: you (your business) invest in a new piece of equipment in order to offer customers and your competition can see if it is a good idea by watching the reaction of your customers without making the same investment).
